Work Health & Safety Representative – 5 Day Course

Course Overview
This nationally recognised course equips elected Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs) with the knowledge and practical skills required to effectively represent workers in health and safety matters. Participants will gain a strong understanding of WHS legislation, risk management principles, consultation processes, and the powers of HSRs under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (Qld). The course includes training on issuing Provisional Improvement Notices (PINs) and directing unsafe work to cease.
It is approved by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) and is mandatory for all newly elected HSRs in Queensland.

Pre-requisites:
There are no formal pre-requisites; however, students must bring 3 forms of identification on the day of training, including at least one form of photographic ID (e.g. driver’s licence, passport, or proof of age card), to meet enrolment and regulatory compliance requirements.
Course Description:

This Work Health and Safety Representative (HSR) course is approved by WorkSafe Queensland and provides participants with the skills and knowledge required to fulfil the role of a Health and Safety Representative in the workplace. It covers interpreting WHS legislation, identifying and managing risks, issuing PINs (Provisional Improvement Notices), and participating in incident investigations and workplace inspections.


Who should Enrol?
  • Newly elected Health and Safety Representatives (as required under WHS Act 2011 – QLD)
  • Existing HSRs seeking refresher training
  • Team leaders, supervisors, and safety committee members
What Will I Learn?
  • Overview of WHS legislation and duty of care
  • Powers and functions of HSRs under the WHS Act
  • Identifying workplace hazards and assessing risks
  • Issuing PINs and directing unsafe work to stop
  • Effective consultation and communication strategies
  • Incident notification and workplace investigation roles

Assessment:

Theory: No formal exam. Participation in activities, case studies, and group discussions is required.
Practical (including physical requirements): Engagement in simulated workplace scenarios including hazard identification and risk control planning.
Note: Participants should be prepared for collaborative learning, written activities, and role plays.


Course Outcomes:

Upon successful completion, students will receive a Statement of Attendance for:
WHSQ-NAT-1120 – Health and Safety Representative (HSR) Training (Queensland approved)


Refresher Training:

As of 29 July 2024, Refresher HSR training is mandatory every 12 months under WHSQ regulations. A 1-day refresher course is available and must be completed annually to maintain compliance as a Health and Safety Representative in Queensland.

This course is delivered face-to-face by qualified and experienced trainers, ensuring a high standard of practical instruction.

  1. Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN): Basic English, reading, writing, and numeracy skills are required.
  2. Unique Student Identifier (USI): You must hold a valid USI to enrol.
  3. Identification Requirements: Please bring three forms of identification, with at least one containing a photograph.
  4. Arrival Time: We recommend arriving at least 10 minutes prior to the scheduled course start time.
