Course Overview
This course provides the knowledge and skills required to be appointed as a Workplace Health and Safety Officer (WHSO) under Queensland legislation. It covers WHS laws, risk management, incident response, and safety system implementation.

Ideal for supervisors, managers, and safety representatives, the course ensures participants can effectively oversee health and safety practices in the workplace.

Participants will complete a core unit and one elective stream (Construction, Industrial, or Services).

Core Modules (5 Days) : $1,850 per person

  • Construction Elective (3 Days): $1,000 per person
  • Industrial Elective (2 Days): $650 per person
  • Services Elective (1 Day): $450 per person

Pre-requisites:
There are no formal pre-requisites; however, students must bring 3 forms of identification on the day of training, including at least one form of photographic ID (e.g., driver’s licence, passport, or proof of age card), to meet enrolment and regulatory compliance requirements.
Course Description:

This WHSQ-approved course provides participants with the knowledge and skills to perform duties as a Workplace Health and Safety Officer (WHSO) in Queensland under the Work Health and Safety Act 2011. It includes a mandatory 5-day core unit and a chosen industry-specific elective.

Successful completion allows participants to apply to WHSQ for a Certificate of Authority as a WHSO.

What Will I Learn?

Core Unit (5 Days):

  • WHS legislation and responsibilities
  • Risk and hazard management
  • Emergency planning and incident response
  • Workplace consultation and communication
  • WHSO powers, duties, and compliance responsibilities

Elective Units:

  • Construction (3 Days): Construction site risks, Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS), high-risk activities, and compliance in the building and infrastructure sector.
  • Industrial (2 Days): Focus on hazards and WHS processes for manufacturing, warehousing, and logistics operations.
  • Services (1 Day): Tailored for sectors such as retail, education, aged care, and hospitality. Emphasises WHS in lower-risk but high-compliance settings.

Assessment:

Theory: Written and verbal assessments covering legislation, WHS principles, and WHSO responsibilities.

Practical (including physical requirements): Group exercises, case studies, and simulated workplace-based activities.

Note: Basic English reading and comprehension skills are required to complete assessments.


Course Outcomes:

Upon successful completion, participants will receive a WHSQ-approved Certificate of Authority as a Workplace Health and Safety Officer.


Refresher Training:

There is no mandatory refresher for WHSOs under current legislation; however, WHSQ recommends refresher training every 3–5 years to maintain currency and awareness of legislative changes.

This course is delivered face-to-face by qualified and experienced trainers, ensuring a high standard of practical instruction.

  1. Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN): Basic English, reading, writing, and numeracy skills are required.
  2. Unique Student Identifier (USI): You must hold a valid USI to enrol.
  3. Identification Requirements: Please bring three forms of identification, with at least one containing a photograph.
  4. Arrival Time: We recommend arriving at least 10 minutes prior to the scheduled course start time.
