Participants must hold a Statement of Attainment FWPCOT2275 – Fell Trees Manually (Basic)

This unit provides the skills and knowledge required to manually fell trees with more complex characteristics, such as heavier lean, larger diameter, or heavier canopy. It includes hazard analysis, advanced cutting techniques, risk control, and environmental awareness. The course is designed for experienced chainsaw operators working in more challenging forestry, conservation, or land management environments.

• Forestry or vegetation management personnel
• Rural fire or emergency response staff
• Landcare and environmental project teams
• Anyone who needs to safely fell complex or larger trees as part of their role

• Advanced tree hazard and condition assessment
• Selecting appropriate felling methods for intermediate trees
• Safe operation of chainsaws with advanced notching/back-cutting
• Risk controls, exclusion zones, and escape planning
• Cutting trees under lean, twist, or pressure
• Environmental and WHS compliance in high-risk settings

Theory:
Written and oral questions assessing knowledge of intermediate-level felling procedures, risks, and safety practices

Practical (including physical requirements):
Participants will demonstrate safe manual felling of intermediate trees in a controlled setting using advanced cutting techniques.

Note: This course involves strenuous physical activity including prolonged chainsaw operation, cutting under tension, working on uneven terrain, and managing large tree sections. A high level of physical fitness, coordination, and stamina is required.

Upon successful completion, students will receive a Statement of Attainment for:

Refresher training is recommended every 2–3 years, or as required by changes in equipment, safety practices, or role responsibilities.
