Control Traffic with a Stop/Slow bat

Course Overview
On successful completion of this course trainees in the resources and infrastructure industries will be able to demonstrate the correct method for installation/removal of signs and devices in accordance with traffic management plans and controlling traffic using a STOP/SLOW bat in accordance with approved procedures set by the Queensland Government.

The course will also provide the trainee with the knowledge and practical skills as a traffic controller to plan and prepare their work; coordinate traffic; operate radios; and clean up the worksite.

Course Outcome

It is expected that participants should acquire knowledge and understanding of the following areas:

  • Roles and responsibilities of traffic controllers
  • Standards and approved operating procedures for controlling traffic
  • Appropriate dress code when performing traffic control work
  • Authorities regarding compliances and enforcement of road rules

Upon successful completion of this course participants will receive a Statement of Attainment.

Course Refresher

To renew your traffic controller accreditation in Queensland, you are required to successfully complete the Transport and Main Roads (TMR) approved training program and demonstrate currency of industry practice as a Traffic Controller. Your Traffic Controller Industry Authority Card must be renewed every three (3) years. It is your responsibility to ensure that you maintain current accreditation when performing traffic controller duties.

The renewal training program revisits the basic skills and knowledge required to work safely as a traffic controller, to make sure that traffic controllers are competent and up-to-date. Vocational competency is defined as broad industry knowledge and experience, usually combined with a relevant industry qualification. A person who has vocational competency will be familiar with the content of the vocation and will have relevant current experience in the industry.

This will include, but is not limited to, updates to:

  • Approved PPE for Traffic Controllers in QLD
  • Authority to control traffic
  • Speed limits for controlling traffic
  • Responsibility for Traffic Controller Ahead/Prepare to Stop signs
  • Location of traffic control station
  • Correct procedures for controlling traffic
  • Communication with the public
  • Two-way radio communications and protocol
  • Controlling traffic at night
  • Reporting offenders
  • Removing or covering signs when not controlling traffic.

Refresher Course Requirements

This is a refresher course available to current Traffic Controllers who need to renew their traffic control licence.  Each participant must complete this course before renewing their licence at their closest Queensland Department of Transport Customer Service Centre, upon completion and deemed competent they will be issued with a Statement of Attainment for RIIWHS205E Control Traffic with a Stop/Slow bat.

Documents required to take to the Queensland Department of Transport Customer Service Centre:

  • Old Traffic controller accreditation licence
  • Statement of Attainment for RIIWHS205E Control Traffic with a Stop/Slow bat
  • Traffic Controller Accreditation application form

Course Target

Anyone who wishes to gain employment in the Traffic Control industry.

Course Requirements

To learn this course, you will need to:

  • Have held an Australian or foreign provisional or open drivers licence within the last 5 years
  • Be able to read and write Basic English (Workplace Health & Safety Requirement)
  • Bring a photographic ID to the course
  • Be aware, that upon submission of their application to QLD Transport, participants will be required to submit their criminal history and health status. 

Please ensure that you have all of the relevant information available.

Recognised Prior Learning (RPL)/Recognition of Current Competency (RCC) is not offered for this course.

Please note Traffic Controllers require a CPCCWHS1001 Work Safely in the Construction Industry Induction Card (White card) to operate on work sites. This is not a pre-requisite in the Traffic Controller course held at All States Training

Course Duration

This course runs for 8 hours

Course Assessments

The course will be delivered in two parts through on and off the job training over the following duration:

Theory/Practical: 8 hours (nominal)

Practical: a minimum of 20 hours

To achieve a successful outcome participants will be assessed on the evidence collected from a range of activities included in the two parts of the Traffic Control assessment.

 Part 1  Off-the-job

The knowledge component will be delivered by a classroom environment using the TMR approved training resources.

Note:  Unsuccessful trainees must be given an alternative written assessment.

Part 2   On-the-job

Participants must complete a minimum of 20 hours of practical experience in the workplace under the supervision of a mentor who meets the criteria stipulated in the Traffic Controllers Accreditation Scheme Approved Procedure. The employer must provide suitably experienced and skilled workers to provide the mentoring of the student.
