Verification of Current Competencies (VOCC)

Verification of Current Competencies (VOCC) is a method of assessments that are used to ensure staff can operate equipment or perform a task in complete safety. If they can do so according to requirements of the work site it also means substantial savings for their employer. It is better that operators are assessed be competent beforehand rather than damaging machinery or themselves due to poor skills. New National OHS laws, effective 1 January 2012, bring greater importance to employers due diligence and obligation to ensure an individual has "current competency"!

Assessing for Verification of Current Competency enables businesses to confirm that their employees are competent in their skills and using equipment. It is commonly used by many industries for pre-employment checks or prior to contractual employment.

No longer is just holding a ticket/licence or qualification enough for an employer to believe an individual is competent to do a task or operate a machine.

VOCC's can be conducted onsite without interrupting productivity. Verification of Current Competency assessments are done while staff are working eliminate the need for employing temporary replacements. VOCC assessment also provides an alternate pathway for individuals to maintain their eligibility to operate equipment.

Say for example that someone's Certificate of Current Competency to drive a forklift had recently expired. The operator is obviously still competent and could easily demonstrate their skill via a Verification of Current Competency Assessment.

The VOCC would only be needed to check that they are still competent. This eliminates the need to attend any further formal training. It also reduces work down-time and additional costs associated with that.

How is current competency defined?

Current Competency describes a person's ability to perform to a satisfactory level in the workplace, including the person's ability to transfer and apply skills and knowledge to new situations, and to achieve agreed outcomes.

The four aspects of competency are:

  • Task skills, or the requirement to perform individual skills;
  • Task management skills, or the requirement to manage a number of different tasks within the job;
  • Contingency management skills, or the requirement to respond to irregularities and breakdowns in routine; and
  • Job or role environment skills or the requirement to deal with the responsibilities and expectations of the work environment, including working with others

Objective

Assessments can take place at your companies sites. Our assessments include theory questions, verbal questioning and visual observational/demonstration one on one.

Naturally the individual would need to submit proof that they are qualified for those tasks. Things such as log books, licences, tickets or relevant unit of competency testimonials and/or letter(s) from employer(s) stating their employment in this capacity would be necessary prior to VOCC's being conducted.

Client - will receive a Statement of Current Competency that can be used as evidence for current competency. The Client will also be issued with a ID card to state verification of current competency conducted and validity for 5 years to participant.

Our Assessors are industry experts with years of experience and they hold all relevant qualifications.

What if the person is not competent?

If the Verification of Current Competency Assessment found that they were not yet competent? The individual would then be advised of any additional/Gap Training they'd need to undertake in order to be deemed competent again.

Duration

Each assessment will take approximately 2-3 hours and will depend on the type of plant and/or equipment or task being assessed.
