RIIHAN201D Operate a Forklift

This unit describes a participant's skills and knowledge required to operate a forklift in the Resources and Infrastructure Industries. This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles. The work required in this unit relates to the National Standard for High Risk Work. Licensing, legislative, regulatory and certification requirements that apply to this unit can vary between states, territories and Industry sectors. Relevant information must be sourced prior to application of the unit.

 

Course Content

Upon completion, participants will be able to competently:

  • Understand legislated requirements
  • Identify types of forklifts and features of a forklift
  • Stability Characteristics
  • Plan the work for the prevailing working conditions
  • Pre-operational checks
  • Safety procedures
  • Hazard identification
  • Pick-up and stack loads
  • Safely move the load
  • Manoeuvre / position loads
  • Use the controls and operating systems
  • Negotiate hazards
  • Work in confined spaces
  • Parking procedures
  • Stop, shut down and secure the equipment after the completion of operations
  • Maintenance checks

 

Pre-Requisites

  • Participants should have sufficient literacy and numeracy to read and comprehend instructions for safety at the workplace (Workplace Health & Safety requirement)
  • Must be a minimum of 18years of age
  • Have sufficient physical strength and dexterity to do safety checks and basic maintenance and operate the forklift truck as required

 

Elements of the Course

Plan and prepare for forklift operations

  • Access, interpret and apply forklift and load handling documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
  • Obtain, interpret and clarify/confirm work requirements and briefings before proceeding
  • Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
  • Select and wear personal protective equipment appropriate for work activities
  • Identify approved forklift attachments and comply with operating capacities of the allocated equipment
  • Coordinate activities with others at the site prior to commencing, during and on completion of the work activity

Operate forklift

  • Carry out pre-start, start-up, park-up and shutdown procedures
  • Monitor and anticipate traffic flow and work area conditions, facilitate safe operations and ensure the most efficient route of travel is selected and used
  • Correctly fit, use and remove approved forklift attachments
  • Manoeuvre and position forklift smoothly
  • Secure, lift, transfer and place load correctly
  • Act/report on monitoring systems and alarms
  • Recognise and respond to site hazards and emergency situations
  • Complete work correctly

Carry out operator maintenance

  • Carry out forklift inspections and fault finding techniques
  • Carry out routine operational servicing, lubrication and housekeeping tasks
  • Carry out minor maintenance
  • Process written records

Difference between RIIHAN201D and TLILIC2001

The difference between these two forklift competencies is that the RIIHAN201D Forklift is used mainly in the mining industry and the TLILIC2001 competency is a High Risk Licence and used in the general industry.
