What is an Excavator?

An excavator is a self-propelled vehicle (either crawler or wheeled) that has an upper structure, which can move a minimum of 360 degrees. This equipment can excavate, then swing and discharge materials. This action is done through the movement of the boom, without any movement from the chassis or undercarriage of the machine.

The excavator boom has three segments similar to a person's upper arm, forearm and hand. The excavator digs into the ground below ground level with the bucket to excavate materials. When the bucket lifts or swings, it moves the materials toward the machine and then into the discharge area.
